Capacity Planning

You can use Works Order Capacity Planning as a rough-cut plan to check whether there is sufficient capacity to meet the expected production load.

Capacity Planning compares the expected setup and runtimes on Works Order operations to the amount of time each resource has available in the same timeframe, to identify where a resource is over capacity, or has capacity spare.

The Capacity Planning screen can be run for a Labour resource or group of resources, or for a Machine resource or group of resources. The rough-cut plan can be run on a date range and summarised on either a daily, weekly or monthly basis.

Using Capacity Planner

Open: Cim200 Works Orders > Works Order List > Capacity Planning

From the menu:

Open: Cim200 Works Orders > Enquiries > Capacity Planning

Set the criteria for running the Capacity Planner.

1. In the Criteria window make the following selections.

Resource Type : Choose Labour to run the plan against Labour resource(s); choose Machine to run the plan against Machine resource(s); choose Groups to run the plan against Labour and/or Machine groups.  Labour and Machine resources are assigned to a Group in Manufacturing System Manager.  Choosing a group will include all resources assigned to that group.

Tick Box : Tick on each row to select the resource(s) to include in the plan.  Tick the Select All box below to select all resources in the list.

Reference : The reference of the operation resource.

Description : The description of the operation resource.

Capacity : The number of resources included under the resource reference.  For example, one machine resource reference “CNC” is setup, and there are three CNC machines which can perform operations which require “CNC”.

The plan will multiply the hours available by the Capacity quantity to reflect the actual capacity available. For example, during a working week there are 40 production hours available.  For operations using “CNC” resource, having three machines means that production capacity for the week will be 120 hours in total.

The Capacity figure will default from the resource setup in Manufacturing System Manager but can be changed here.  Changes made here will not write back to the resource.

Note: The Capacity quantity must always be a minimum of 1 for the resource to be included in the plan.

Group: The Resource Group of the resource.

Date Range : Use the calendar or type the start and end date for the date range to use.

Include Overdue Operations : Tick to include operations with an End Date prior to the Start date entered in the Date Range.  Selecting this ensures that overdue operations are not ignored.

When the Start Date is in the future, ticking this option includes all open operations dated prior to the Start Date, not just those with an End Date earlier than today’s date.

View : Select from Daily, Weekly or Monthly to set the level at which to summarise the plan.

Phase : Operations can be filtered according to their Phase on the Works Order operation.  By filtering to one phase, the plan can be used to focus specifically on either Setup, Runtime or Teardown operations.

2. Once all the selections have been made, click Confirm to run the Capacity Plan.

  • A bar graph displays the total hours across the date range, comparing load with capacity and showing any capacity overload.

3. Click on the Data tab to see the same data represented in a list, summarised by resource in the top half of the screen. Demands are displayed in the bottom half of the screen, broken down by Works Order operation.

4. To view a works order, select an operation from the bottom half of the screen and click View Works Order.

5. To send the resource summary in the top half of the screen to Excel, click Excel.

6. To change some criteria and run the plan again, click Refresh to be taken back to the plan criteria screen.

7. To close the plan click Close.
